Having trained in Germany, I worked across Europe in Switzerland and France before settling back in Bergamo in Italy in 1989.
In 1995 I moved to the Adult Cardiac Surgery Department in Massa, where I managed to combine your hectic clinical schedule with a highly successful research program at the Institute of Clinical Physiology (CNR). After 4 years (1999), I became Chief of Cardiac Surgery in Massa, creating a unit that under my leadership became a center of excellence in adult Cardiothoracic Surgery with a prestigious international reputation.
After 20 years in Massa, you moved to Milan where you became Director of the Cardiovascular Department at the Humanitas Research Hospital. Thereafter at the helm I was asked to take up the position of Director of Cardiac and Vascular Surgery at the Cardiothoracic Center Sant Ambrogio research hospital in Milan.
In addition to performing over 10 000 cardiac procedures, I have a keen interest in surgical research and have published over 200 peer-reviewed articles. My dedication to establishing and promoting innovation in cardiac surgery is not only demonstrated clinically by more than 3000 minimally invasive procedures, but also through my highly active research program, development of own innovative devices and avid commitment to training the future generation of surgeons.
