Government regulatory bodies clearly have a responsibility to protect the community from potentially harmful new surgical technology until proven to be safe. The tools of evidence based Medicine are used to make this assessment.
This seminar focus is on the nature of 'Evidence' and specifically to seek answers to the questions:
- 'What evidence is really necessary?'
- 'Is it reasonable to demand randomized controlled trials for all surgical interventions?’
- 'Who should pay for expensive evidence?'
- 'Are there other types of evidence that may be better than randomized trials in some circumstances?'
- 'Is there a role for clinical opinion and patient preference in an 'evidence based medicine world?’
- And more.
