Dr Herren is an orthopaedic hand surgeon born in Biel, Switzerland. His focus is on small joint implant development, the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (hand surgical aspects) and quality management with focus on orthopaedic results.

Dr Herren began his study of medicine at the University of Bern, Switzerland in 1982. Following his medical studies, he completed a thesis publication on, "Altered skeletal muscle ultrastructure in renal transplant patients on prednisone," before completing a Medical Physics postgraduate course at Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich, which held special emphasis on biocompatible materials. From 2004–2006, Dr Herren then completed a further postgraduate master course at the University of Bern for a Master of Health Administration.

He is currently the Chief Medical Officer at the Schulthess Clinic, Zurich and a lecturer at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH). Dr Herren is also a medical consultant for the Institute of Biomedical Engineering of the University of Bern and ETH, and is a member of IBRA. .

Dr Herren is the Past President of the Swiss Society for Surgery of the Hand, and is a member of the European Society for Rheumatoid Arthritis Surgery, ETH Alumni and the Mayo Clinic Alumni.

Dr Herren also sits on two editorial boards including the Journal of Hand Surgery (American Edition) and the Journal of Wrist Surgery. He has published approximately 50 peer-reviewed publications, listed with 64 impact points, has published several book chapters and delivered approximately 250 international presentations.
