Education Master Classes
Introducing an exciting new concept for 2012 - The Education Master Class!
Master Classes will be clinical "hands on" sessions run concurrently to the main ACORN program.
There will be 5 x 90 minute sessions running concurrently thoughout the conference. These will run in the morning and afternoon and consist of up to 20 delegates per class allowing greater interaction with the delegate.

Master Class Session 2: Thursday 24 May – 1445 – 1630 Adhesion Prevention & Innovation in Obstetrics and Gynaecology Combined with Surgical Blood Management Practical based workshop focusing on the importance of adhesion prevention in Obstetrics and Gynaecology plus solutions for heavy menstrual bleeding. Includes an overview of disease states and practical demonstrations of innovative technology. Blood management is one of the key topics in surgery and conservation of blood in surgery is key to patient outcomes. Johnson & Johnson will lead this interactive practical skills course featuring solutions in patient blood management and the importance of haemostasis in surgery. Includes interactive quiz. Master Class Session 4: Friday 25 May – 1430 – 1620 HERO's Workshop Harmonic and Enseal Resources onsite (HERO's) is aimed at creating in hospital energy specialists. Participants will be trained with the objective of being able trouble shoot advanced energy devices and capital equipment associated with them. There will also be an overview of how the different energy modalities interact with tissue to create different outcomes. Key Objectives:

Master Class Session 5: Saturday 26 May – 1045– 1240 Surgical Stapling and Making It Work There is a reason why we design our instruments the way we do. This session will review the principles of surgical stapling, what the objective of using a surgical stapler is followed by a hands on feel for the instruments and question and answer session. There will also be a review of what to do when it goes wrong and how to fix it. Key Objectives:

Master Class Session 1: Thursday 24 May – 1115 – 1255 National Breast Cancer Foundation Research Following on from the Medline Pink Glove Dance Breakfast Forum, the Director of Research from the NBCF will be speaking to delegates at the Medline Master Class in Breast Cancer Research. Research is the most effective way to improve prevention, detection and treatment of breast cancer as research. It enables us to understand the complexity of breast cancer and provides evidence of the best ways to prevent, detect and treat breast cancer. The National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) is proud to fund the best breast cancer research in Australia. Since its inception in October 1994, NBCF has allocated more than $74 million to 274 breast cancer research projects across Australia. NBCF encourages research innovation, collaboration between research disciplines and supports talented Australian researchers. Mental Health and Stress Management in the Workplace Fay Jackson is the director of Vision In Mind. She offers consultancy in Mental Health in the work place, corporate sector, public services, Non Government Organizations, community, federal and state governments. Fay is a multi award winning national motivational speaker, educator, advocate and voice for mental health. She is regularly engaged to advise the NSW and federal governments, and Non Government Organizations (NGOs), on the state and conditions of mental illness and mental health in the community, services, and workplace. Master Class Session 1: Thursday 24 May – 1115 – 1255 The New Frontier: Innovations in Patient Positioning A comprehensive overview of best practices within patient positioning – Presented by Erica, Fowler, RN and Adam Jones, RN, this hands-on workshop will focus on best practices within patient positioning and will allow attendees the opportunity to compare hospital specific techniques. Participants will also be introduced to the new SurgiPod positioning arms, a revolutionary new system designed to reduce cross infection and enhance patient stability in a range of unique positions.

Master Class Session 2: Thursday 24 May – 1445 – 1630 Advances in Electrosurgery – Going Beyond the Basics Taking attendees beyond the basics of Cut and Coag – This hands on workshop will allow participants the opportunity to “Slice and Dice” their way to an in-depth understanding of Electrosurgical Waveforms, Current Conduction and Tissue Effects. Practical application of the various electrosurgical modes and accessories will be demonstrated within the context of patient safety, providing a fun and exciting session for those who want to be “Shocked” by what goes on behind the scenes during surgery.

Master Class Session 3: Friday 25 May – 1045 – 1230 The Smoke Evacuation Tool Kit – A “How To” Guide to 100% Compliance Taking Smoke evacuation beyond the discussion phase: This interactive module will walk participants through the various stages of program development from Needs Assessment through to Continued Compliance. Presented by Kay Ball and Peter Turnbull, we will leverage the experiences gained across various continents to provide examples of how to overcome the common pitfalls associated with surgical smoke implementation. Participants will get hands on with procedure specific solutions and will be left with a “Recipe Card” on how to concoct their very own compliant program. A Must Attend for those keen to get serious about plume extraction.

Master Class Session 4: Friday 25 May – 1430 – 1620 Sterile Medication Labelling – Customized Solutions to meet the new National Guidelines Focused primarily on meeting the new Australian Labelling Standards, we will take participants on a journey in customized label development. This workshop will be divided into 2 sections: (a) Breaking Down the National Recommendations and (b) How to design you very own customized sterile medication labels to meet the recommendations. Participants will have an opportunity to discuss interpretation and proposed roll-out strategies, easing the potential headaches come implementation time.

Master Class Session 5: Saturday 26 May – 1045– 1240 Laparoscopic Safety – Ensuring Optimal Outcomes With the continued rise in laparoscopic case load, we will have a look into what can be done to eliminate the potential risks associated with both common uncommon procedures. Topics of discussion will include capacitive coupling, insulation integrity, and operational efficiency. Presented by Erica Fowler, RN and Adam Jones, RN, Participants will be given the opportunity to discuss best practices and to brainstorm on the future of laparoscopic safety.
